Fusion Theory

Before We Start

Fusion is one of the interesting components of the SMT series. Players can fuse some personae (or in other SMT, demons) and obtain an advanced persona, who can assist the MC with more high-rank skills or stats. You can certainly complete the game without using fusion, cause you can recruit part of the personae through the Shuffle Time after battles; Lovers, Towers, Fortune, Judgment, and World personae can only be obtained through fusion, so are the personae that can be unlocked or created through special fusion.

In Persona, the result of your fusion is dictated by five factors:

  1. The arcana of the ingredient personae
  2. The player level of the MC
  3. In the case of 2-persona fusion, the rank of your persona
  4. In the case of 3-persona fusion, both rank and the current level of your persona (Not the MC's level)
  5. Availability of items that unlock a special persona

Let me call the ingredient personae as "parents", and the resultant one as "child". The whole system can be seen as a marriage of arcana. The relationship between parental arcana and child arcanum is predetermined in P4. However, which persona in that particular arcanum will be returned to you is decided by rank or current level of the parents.

Rank is the required level to create that persona, or can be viewed as the lowest possible level of that persona. Current level is the actual level the persona has. For example, the rank of Jack Frost is 16, which means you can only get Jack Frost in the dungeon after battle or create a Jack Frost in the Velvet room if and only if the MC has reached a player level of 16. Once you have used the Jack Frost in battle and let it level up, say, to 19. They 19 is the Jack Frost's "current level". In 2-persona fusion we care about the parents' rank, in 3-persona fusion we care about the parents' rank as well as current level. A lot of players often complain that a certain 3-persona fusion does not work because they have not nailed down this difference.

The player's level (the level of the MC) has nothing to do with which persona will be returned, it dictates if that fusion can be performed. If the rank of the child is higher than the MC's level, even your recipe is right, you cannot create that persona.

Some personae can only be created through 4-persona, 5-persona, 6-persona, and 12-persona fusion. They will be covered separately.

Some other personae can only be created if they are unlocked. Unlocking of persona happens when you have maxed a social link.

2-persons Fusion

In a 2-persona fusion:

  1. To find out the child's arcanum, use the 2-persona Fusion Table below. Fist find the arcanum of one of the parents along the top row (or the left-most column), then look for the other parent's arcanum on the left-most column (or the top row), locate the cell where they cross perpendicularly. That would be the child's arcanum. For instance, a Fool mixed with Magician will give you a Temperance persona.
  2. To find out which persona in the arcana will be resulted, find out the average of the parents' rank, the child persona will be the next available persona with a rank that is higher than the average you obtained. For instance, if you mix Izanagi (Fool rank 1) and Pixie (Magician rank 2), you know that you'll get a Temperance. The average parental rank is 1.5. If you check the persona list, the one with a rank closet but higher than 1.5 is Apsaras (rank 4), that would be your result.

Special case:
If both parents are of the same arcanum. The rule will be different. Same-arcanum fusion results in persona with lower rank. For example, if you mix Yomotsu-shikome (Fool rank 7) with Obariyon (Fool rank 13), you will not get Legion (Fool rank 21) nor Obariyou, instead you'll get Izanagi (Fool rank 1).

Another three special cases in 2-persona fusion are:
Hermit Nebiros X Devil Belial = Death Alice
Magician Randa X Emperor Barong = Tower Shiva (Needs Maxed Tower social link)
Tower Shiva X Priestess Parvati = Judgment Ardha

3-persona Fusion

In a 3-persona fusion:

  1. First, ignore the one with the highest current level.
  2. Determine which arcanum would be resulted for the other two parental personae with the 2-persona Fusion Table. Let's call that an "intermediate parent".
  3. Now, we can consider that persona we ignored in step 1. To find out the child's arcanum, use the 3-persona Fusion Table. Fist find the arcanum of the "intermediate parent" along the top row (or the left-most column), then look for the arcanum of the highest-current-level parent on the left-most column (or the top row), locate the cell where they cross perpendicularly. That would be the child's arcanum.
  4. To find out which persona in the arcana will be resulted, find out the average of the parents' rank and then add 5, the child persona will be the next available persona with a rank that is higher than the average you obtained.

An few examples here:
Parents: Izanagi (Fool rank 1, level 20), Sakimitama (High Priestess rank 11, level 12), and Jack Frost (Magician rank 16, level 18)

  1. Ignore Izanagi because its current level is highest
  2. Using the 2-persona Fusion Table, we will find that the "intermediate parent" resulted from Sakimitama and Jack Frost would be Moon
  3. Using the 3-persona Fusion Table, we can see that the "intermediate parent" (Moon) and Izanagi (Fool) will form an Empress, that's the child's arcanum
  4. The average parental rank is (1 + 11 + 16)/3 = 9.3. Truncate and add 5, we get rank 14
  5. The Empress persona that has the closest but higher than rank 14 is Yaksini (rank 18), that would be the result.

Parents: Izanagi (Fool rank 1, level 3), Sakimitama (High Priestess rank 11, level 12), and Jack Frost (Magician rank 16, level 18)

  1. Ignore Jack Frost because its current level is highest
  2. Using the 2-persona Fusion Table, we will find that the "intermediate parent" resulted from Sakimitama and Izanagi would be Death
  3. Using the 3-persona Fusion Table, we can see that the "intermediate parent" (Death) and Jack Frost (Magician) will form a Fool, that's the child's arcanum
  4. The average parental rank is (1 + 11 + 16)/3 = 9.3. Truncate and add 5, we get rank 14
  5. The Fool persona that has the closest but higher than rank 14 is Legion (rank 21), that would be the result.

The above two examples highlight how the result can change if the current levels are different.

Special case:
If all three of the parents are of the same arcanum. The rule will be different. Same-arcanum fusion results in the same persona with higher rank. For example, if you mix Izanagi (Fool rank 1), Yomotsu-shikome (Fool rank 7) with Obariyon (Fool rank 13), you will get Legion (Fool rank 21).

Another default exception is:
Fortune Clotho X Fortune Lachesis X Fortune Atropos = Fortune Norn (Needs Maxed Fortune social link)
